Presentation project Magic, gender and sexuality in the neopagan community

Hello to everyone reading this,

My name is Martin Lepage and I am a Ph.D candidate in religious sciences at UQÀM. I am currently looking for respondants willing to participate in the elaboration of my doctorat’s thesis. In our department of religious studies, we look at religion in a way that does not include prejudice against a subculture or minorities. For my part, I am interested at looking at genders and sexuality within neopaganism according to a sociofeminist approach, in order to acquire a better understanding of the neopagan movement from the inside, as to how genders and sexuality are lived and constructed by pagans in a daily fashion, alone or in group, and this, in contrast with a sexual identity that still challenges the norm. My goal is to question these perceptions that deal with gender, sex and sexual orientation in light of beliefs and pratices of magic and witchcraft, with the aid of life narratives.

Therefore, I am in need of your help and call upon your generosity by answering this questionnaire if you are :

  • You possess religious beliefs or practices or a spiritual path that are related to magic or witchcraft AND are not heterosexual.
  • You consider yourself a part of the LGBT community (PFLAG, etc.) AND part of the pagan community in general.
  • You are a pagan woman or man who is gay/homosexual, bisexual, transsexual, transgender, cis.
  • You identify yourself with words like witch, wicca/wiccan AND queer, fairies, radical fairies.
  • You consider your sexuality or sexual orientation is of no importance or cannot be defined, even in the context of your spiritual journey.
  • You consider that your gender is of no importance or doesn’t need to be defined within your religious beliefs or practices.

You can find my questionnaire at https://public.me.com/martinlepage26/ . Please send it or your questions to martinlepage26@me.com. You can answer directly on the document.

Please note that this is a preliminary questionnaire. If necessary, other questions might be sent your way.

Thank you very much and don’t hesitate if you have any question regarding my project or the questionnaire itself.

May West Island Pagan Brunch

4 May 2010

For the past couple of years, there’s been a pagan brunch in the West Island, for those who have difficulty making it to the more centrally located Pagan Brunch. It takes place on the second Sunday of each month, which this month falls on May 9th. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at my address below. (just replace the [at] with an @ sign.)

So here are the details:

What: West Island Pagan Brunch
When: Sunday, May 9, 2010 10:00 AM
Where: Dejeuner Inc.
3339-B, boulevard des Sources
Dollard-des-Ormeaux , QC H9B 1Z8
514-684-8000

As usual, we’ll meet up at Dejeuner Inc. on Sources Boulevard, and afterwards, weather permitting, we’ll go to the Centennial Park gazebo for some drumming out in nature.

Everyone is welcome. Bring a friend, or your kids, if you think they’ll enjoy the breakfast, chat or drumming.

We’ll likely be in the back of the restaurant again in the section behind the kitchen, so if you don’t see us, try back there. Look for a pentagram meetup sign on the table.

How to get there:
From Côte Vertu, take the 215 to Boul. des Sources and Brunswick.
(leaves at 9:43 to get there at 10:15)

From Fairview-Pointe Claire – Take the 215 or 208 to the corner of Sources and Brunswick.

The restaurant is near the gas station, in the strip mall facing Boul. des Sources.

Please remember to RSVP so that we can reserve the number of places sitting together at the restaurant. If you don’t RSVP you may be stuck eating brunch alone.

See you there.

Alex.
